The West University of Timisoara (Romania) - The origins of this University can be found in Decree 660, issued on December 30th 1944, which stipulated that a university for the western part of the country should be set up in Timisoara.
- Its original faculties have either disappeared or have become independent institutions. The metamorphosis of this higher education institution into a University took place at the end of September 1962. This is why the date of October 1th, mentioned in the University Chart as the Official Day of the University, is significant not only as marking a new beginning for our academic community, but also as crowning the effort to complete a difficult process which had to be gone through between the setting up and consolidation of the institution and its final recognition.
- A difficult period followed, particularly for the humanities and the sciences. Such subjects as music, drawing, history, geography, natural science and chemistry disappeared one after another, while Modern Languages were significantly narrowed. Consequently, many of the University’s facilities were transferred to other institutions.
- It was the year 1989, the year of the Romanian Revolution that represented a turning point in the development of this institution. This event led to the normal conditions of today.
- An essential change of mentality has occurred in the whole way of conceiving the academic institution, following the model of similar democratic institutions in the West.
- Truly international in its outlook, the University is formally linked with over 120 universities worldwide. Student exchange received top priority in this co-operation agreements.
- Over the last fourteen years, the University has responded to changes in national educational policy, to demographic shifts, to a radically different economy and the requirements of the marketplace, as well as to emerging local and regional needs and to new technologies. All of those changes have led, in their turn, to new expectations on the part of students, staff and administrators.
- The West University equips individuals with the skills they need in order to make an effective contribution to society. This task is currently being achieved through eleven faculties that provide a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.
- The results achieved in many programs involving international collaboration – particularly in exchange programs such as Socrates, PHARE, Leonardo de Vinci etc. – are indeed impressive and are among the best achievements of the University.
