Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics at Uppsala University The Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics has a long history. It was grounded 1895 as a continuation school for domestic education. Not until the end of 1970th it became a part of Uppsala University and 1989 the research subject Domestic Sciences was established. Contemporaneously the department was named Department of Domestic Sciences. However, almost 20 years later, in fact not until March 1st 2008, the name of the department is the Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics. Among 16 other departments it belongs to the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University. Today all programmes given by the department are very popular. Each year approximately 250 students follow one of the departments study programmes, clinical dietician- or administrative dietician programme. Students can also follow an independent course in one of the fields, e.g. nutrition, food science, food sociology, sensory evaluations and a number of dietetic courses etc. The department also offers courses within the home economic teacher education with a total number of about 70 home economic students per year. The department has one professor with special focus towards meal research. In 2008 the department has approximately ten senior lecturers. Three of these are associated professors. The research field is focused on topics that cover food and meals in relation to health and well-being. There are six PhD students covering this research and investigate different population groups from young to old by quantitative- as well as qualitative methods. The vision of the Department of Food, Nutrition and Dietetics is to develop, and improve the knowledge and behaviour of food and health in the Swedish society. Margaretha Nydahl
